The Alliance of Powerful Monsters – That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Anime Episode 13 Review

Three Powerful Kijin

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime anime episode 13 dropped on Japanese television December 25, 2018. You can also watch this episode online at an anime streaming website known as Crunchyroll. In the marshlands of the Lizardmen territory, some powerful monsters come to the rescue to defeat the Orc menace plaguing the Lizardmen.

There was a lot going on within the plot of this episode, and it was incredibly entertaining. Each character had their own task that was thoroughly fleshed out, and we finally get to see what these powerful monsters really can do in battle. The tone was way more intense and violent than previous episodes, but it still maintains the usual themes of this series. I also have to say that the art and animation was mesmerizing with all the action going on, and the sound work helped to make the episode stand out more. Of course, I will break down my thoughts in detail about the episode right here in this article.

The Would Be Leader Gabiru

As Rimuru and the other powerful monsters make their way to join forces with the Lizardmen, they stumble upon a lizard person defending her life against Orcs. Rimuru and the monsters soon understand what’s been going on at the Lizardmen territory, and they quickly make battle plans to fight the Orc army. All the monsters finally make it to the marshlands and displaying their overwhelming power in the presence of the Orcs.

Character Setup

The Power of a DryadThe main character didn’t really do much in this episode except for negotiating an alliance with the Lizardmen and leading his subordinates. This episode was mostly preparing him to fight the Orc Lord, so that fight may occur in the next episode.

The idiot Gabiru wrongfully keeps his father locked up. He believed that he could take down the Orc army alone with his forces, but he obviously gets overwhelmed and needs some immediate help.

Each of the monsters were stationed in different areas of the battlefield in the marshlands. Most of them fought in areas with the most Orcs, while others were on a search and rescue mission. Also, the dryad makes a move and shows what she’s capable of.

Tone & Themes

The Strength of a Orc GeneralThis episode definitely had his moments with a slight touch of grit and violence. The Lizardmen as well as Rimuru were absolutely shocked from the brutality that the Kijin, Goblins, and Direwolves inflicted on the Orcs. Though, this episode may have been more violent than the other episodes, it still remained lighthearted and not taking itself too seriously.

The themes that I noticed are that you should always help those in need, you should not go into battle without knowing what you’re up against, and knowing when to fight those who try to bring harm to others.

Animation & Sound

Ranga Getting ViciousThe animation in episode 13 was just as good as the animation in episode 7. The only difference is that episode 13 had actual blood and gore violent animation, although, it still doesn’t come close to the violent animation of Goblin Slayer. When the monsters were fighting in the Orcs, all the abilities they displayed were colorful and explosive. I also noticed how vicious Ranga looked in one particular scene, and I was intimidated by the look.

They used the right songs in the appropriate scenes, and I especially liked the new industrial soundtrack they used for the Dryad when she got serious. Lastly, the voice actors did a solid performance in all of their roles.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Anime Episode 13 – Final Thoughts

The Orc Lord ApproachesI gotta say that this is one of the best episodes of Reincarnated as a Slime. I was fairly entertained by the action, and the creators of this episode balanced violence with lightheartedness very well. It really felt like they packed in a lot of plot points in this episode. Unfortunately, we did not get to see the main character fight the Orc Lord just yet, but I know we’ll definitely get that fight in the next episode.

This episode has a very exciting plot, all the characters on the battlefield had something to do, the tone was violent without being overly dramatic, the basic shonen themes were used in this episode, and it was enjoyable to watch such great cinematography.

Based on my analysis, I give this episode a score of 9/10.
