New Dark Fantasy Anime for Fall 2018 – Goblin Slayer Ep. 1 Review

Goblin Slayer 1

On October 7, 2018, a new dark fantasy anime called Goblin Slayer, by White Fox studio, premiered on Japanese television. The Goblin Slayer anime seinen series was directed by Takaharu Ozaki and written by Hideyuki Kurata and Yōsuke Kuroda. Funimation and Crunchyroll has also licensed the dark fantasy anime Goblin Slayer to be released for Western audiences.

Goblin Slayer is based on a dark fantasy light novel, then later received 2 manga adaptations serialized in the Monthly Big magazine, as well as a prequel manga serialized in Young Gangan magazine. Also, Yen Press published the light novels and the manga in North America.

The dark fantasy anime Goblin Slayer include genres such as action and fantasy, but there are definitely some horror elements as well. Even though there are very dark and gruesome things happening to characters, I am still going to give this episode a review because everything with the plot, characters, atmosphere, animation, and sound was perfectly executed.

The Premise

Goblin Slayer episode 1 starts out with a priestess who wants to become an adventurer, which puts her at porcelain rank that is the lowest rank as an adventurer. Another group of porcelain members ask the priestess to join their group to fight some goblins, but this group is obviously inexperienced and have no idea what they’re getting themselves into.

The group of adventurers’ get decimated, but an adventurer known as Goblin Slayer comes to the rescue. After the priestess’s experience and seeing how Goblin Slayer handled the goblins, she decides to join Goblin Slayer in his adventures.

Character Setup

In this episode, it seems to be focusing more on the characters Goblin Slayer and the priestess that joins him by the end of the episode.

The other porcelain adventures acted way too cocky, which inevitably led to their defeat.

The priestess is some kind of healer and user of light who just became an adventurer. She’s obviously inexperienced, but her resolution is to become an adventurer no matter what to protect people in an unfair and dark world.

Goblin Slayer is a very mysterious character, but he does appear to be one of the higher ranking adventurers’. He really handles business without hesitation when facing a threat and he has a full understanding of how goblins operate. I don’t know what happened in his past, but he does seem to despise goblins a great deal.

Mood & Narrative

At the opening of the episode, I had no idea what was going on, but I know it freaked the heck out of me with it’s very grim tone. Once the episode gets more contextual, everything feels more peaceful when a priestess applies for an adventurers’ guild.

When a group of porcelain adventurers’ take on a dangerous mission, I can immediately tell things would go wrong, and it extremely went worse than what I expected. What happened to these adventurers’ just disturbed me in so many ways, but it did not hinder the story in any way.

When Goblin Slayer arrived he had this overwhelming presence about him and I can tell he was no joke. His actions was basically telling the audience that this fictional world is never fair and the characters have to do what is necessary to survive.

Animation & Sound

The Intense Goblin Slayer

The animation was great because they used the right amount of CG mixed in with most of the 2D animation. I love the design of Goblin slayer because they made him look like an intimidating figure with this sleek knight armor, which made him look expressionless when he’s wearing that metal helmet, and the place where his eyes see through his helmet were glowing piercing red.

There were a couple scenes where the use of slow motion was used so well, but I don’t want to spoil it by giving too much detail. The music composition was handled appropriately for many scenes, and Something there is not an opening theme, although, there is an opening title sequence. There is battle music playing at the ending credits, but I don’t know if there will be a real opening and ending theme in future episodes.

Goblin Slayer Ep. 1 – Final Thoughts

When a series like this makes you feel unsettled and disturbed, that means it’s doing it’s job to make you feel that way intentionally.

Goblin Slayer is a story about an unfair world where it’s all about survival of the fittest, and if characters are inexperienced fighters, then they will meet an untimely humiliating demise. This episode showed that young adventurers’ are not really trained to know the horrors of battling goblins, so they have to learn it the hard way and it’s not pleasant.

The person that directed this episode did a wonderful job directing the animation and the overall unpleasant mood of the plot and narrative. Goblin Slayer is at its core a dark fantasy series, and it will tackle themes that will take you out of your comfort zone. This episode made me very interested to see where this series goes and how it presents its dark themes in future episodes. I gotta give this episode a 9 out of 10 score for courageously going in the territory it went in and for great animation.

I gave my honest review of Goblin Slayer episode 1, and please send comments about this review or if you seen this episode.
