Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens is one of the best shounen anime from the 2018 winter season that has been the most slept on series. But if you have seen the anime series Durarara and Baccano, then this is definitely worth a viewing. There is enough action, crime, story development, and character development to satisfy your anime needs. Also, this series has only a total number of 12 episodes, so it won’t take you too long to complete the series. Now, let me get into my review of the plot, characters, art, animation, and the music within the series.
The story is about the Hakata ward in the city of Fukuoka involving investigators, assassins, hackers, torturers, avengers, and doctors who get rid of dead bodies for criminals. Some of these outlaws commit criminal acts for a good cause, but others have much more sinister motives. The outlaws who are the good guys clean up the city they live in whenever injustices are committed against the innocent, but they also do it to make a living. Throughout this series you will notice a lot of baseball themes placed into the story as well as within the title of each episode. So, I would have to give the plot an 8.5 out of 10.
I would have to say that the characters give the series a lot of personality. There are 2 MC’s (make characters), and a good number of supporting characters. The dynamic between many of the characters and the city they live in reminds me a lot of the anime series Durarara. There are a number of antagonists as well that have very similar dynamics to the protagonists. I believe this series almost feels like a Western whenever the protagonists clash with the antagonists, because it seems as if the protagonists are saying, “This town a big enough for the both of us,” to the antagonists. But the protagonists always come out on top because they have a sense of teamwork whereas the antagonists don’t care about each other at all and that’s why they inevitably fail. The theme of teamwork always seems to be emphasized by the sport of baseball throughout each episode, especially when the MC’s and supporting characters decide to play baseball, not professional, from time to time. These are the best shounen anime characters since Durarara and Baccano, and I’m going to have to give the characters a 9.25 out of 10.
Art, Animation, and Music
The animation is slightly above average, but it’s no Durarara in terms of animating an anime series. But the animation does shine and stand out more during violent and action heavy scenes. There is also various amounts of brightly colored clothing designs, character looks, and the urban cityscape works well with the criminal tone of this series. The music is not highly exaggerated like it is in other shounen anime. I think the music has a very noir and smooth sound within the many of the scenes, and it maintains that sound even in action central scenes. Together, I have to give the art, animation, and music an 8.25 out of 10.
Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens – Final Words
This is a highly recommended shounen anime series to watch if you like organized crime stories. I made sure to give a thorough review to help you decide whether you want to watch the series or not. There is a good amount of action, story development, character development, music, art, and animation, which are the most important parts of an anime series. The average score for this anime series is an 8.6 out of 10. I hope you enjoyed my review of Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens, and please send any comments that you have in the comments section below.
